Palm has become the latest smartphone developer to jump on the app store bandwagon, with this week's launch of the Palm Software Store.

The store currently features more than 5,000 applications and games, and features support for more than 25 Palm devices running both Palm's OS and Microsoft Windows Mobile. According to Palm, over 1,000 of the apps on offer at the moment are free.

Applications available include Pocket Quicken, a Facebook application and Encyclopaedia Britannica, and games such as Tetris and Bejewelled.

More than 1,500 developers have submitted apps to the store so far.

The company is promoting the launch by offering its initial customers a coupon code offering 25% off their first download.

There is no word yet on whether Palm's upcoming OS, Nova - which is expected to launch in January - will be supported. But it seems more than likely that it will.

Palm is clearly hoping that the app store and the new OS will give the beleaguered developer a much-needed shot in the arm.
