PCCW Global and Vietnam's VNPT have signed an MoU to jointly explore new business opportunities in the Southeast Asian telecom market.

The companies have announced an intention to “collaborate in the delivery of a wide range of services, including Internet, satellite, voice, data, fixed-line, mobile, multimedia and IT solutions.”

The announcement hints that the collaboration may also extend to the provision of content and value-added services.

“The MoU signed by VNPT and PCCW Global will lay the first foundation for the long-term and overall cooperation between the two sides in the coming time,” VNPT vice president Nghiem Phu Hoan said.

A spokesperson for PCCW Global declined to give further details of the agreement at this time.

Separately, PCCW is rumored to be preparing a bid of around $300 million for two Australian data businesses being sold off as part of the divestiture of construction company Leighton Holdings' fiber assets.

PCCW plans to make a play for Metronode and Infoplex during the auction, two sources toldReuters.

Major Australian ISP TPG Telecom is one of the front-runners for the main asset being sold off, Leighton's NextGen fiber business.
