PCCW-HKT said Wednesday that it has become the first service provider in greater China to deploy 802.11ac Wi-Fi.

The deployment of 802.11ac Wi-Fi technology powered by 1Gbps fiber backhaul will improve data speed performance for customers with supporting devices, said Peter Lam, HKT’s managing director of engineering.

The telco will deploy Cisco service provider Wi-Fi solutions including the Aironet 3600 Series wireless access point, the vendor said.

Using the 802.11ac standard, the Aironet 3600 Series is able to support up to 1.3Gbps of throughput.
