PCCW has won Hong Kong's fifth 3G license after being the only company to take part in the auction.

The Hong Kong Office of Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) said the incumbent will pay HK$76 million ($9.8 million) to use the spectrum in the 850-MHz band and a performance bond HK$150 million ($19.3 million).

Under the terms of the 15-year license, PCCW will be able to offer cdma2000 services after November 28, 2008.

With the license, PCCW, which re-entered the mobile market through the acquisition of Sunday Communications in 2005, will become the city's only carrier that operates both cdma2000 and GSM/W-CDMA networks.

OFTA announced in April it would auction the spectrum that had been previously used for CDMA 2G services.

According to the CDMA Development Group, Asia Pacific is the largest region for cdma2000 with 63 commercial cdma2000 1X and 13 cdma2000 1xEV-DO networks and nearly 150 million users. The CDG said cdma2000 is expanding rapidly in the region, growing at 34% annually, fueled by the rapid subscriber growth in China and India.
