Falling prices for 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10GE) optical components and physical layer devices are clearing the way for wide-scale adoption and deployment of 10GE equipment in data centers and telecom networks, according to a new report from Heavy Reading.

Simon Stanley, analyst at large with Heavy Reading, said that the data center has become the leading application for 10GE, along with increased deployment of carrier Ethernet services.

\'In the wide-area network, 10GE offers significant cost benefits over alternative technologies such as Sonet/SDH, and several carriers have already committed to 10GE deployments with more sure to follow,\' Stanley added.
