Qualcomm said it has placed an HSPA+ Release 7 data call at a transfer rate of more than 20 Mbps in a 5-megahertz channel, according to a FierceBroadbandWireless report.

Such a capability would allow HSPA operators to double the data and triple the voice capacity of their networks compared with current iterations of HSPA, according to Qualcomm.

The transfer rate was achieved using Qualcomm's MDM8200 chipset product.

This is an initial step towards commercial deployment of HSPA+, expected early next year, said Alex Katouzian, vice president of product management at Qualcomm CDMA Technologies.
