The global market for session border controllers (SBC) has been forecast to reach $1 billion by 2015, as more voice traffic is moved onto IP networks.

Infonetics estimates that the service provider SBC market grew 45% in 2010 to $271 million, due to the increasing use of session border controllers for interconnection between operators.

But SIP trunking will continue to be the main SBC application used by service provides through to 2013, with interconnection tailing in second place.

Acme Packet dominates the market – the vendor was named as one of the two top SBC vendors by 96% of operators surveyed by the research firm.

Huawei has consistently been ranked second or third by market share, and was named by 19% of respondents as their installed SBC vendor.

The most highly rated SBC features are managing session capability and scalability, and signaling DoS attacks.
