ShenTong Metro taps Nortel for service upgrade

Shanghai ShenTong Metro Assets Management has selected a Metro Ethernet solution from Nortel for the major reconstruction work on the Shanghai Metro Line 1 public system.

Despite having its own comprehensive business digital transmission system, ShenTong Metro tapped Nortel because ShenTong's legacy equipment on the line is inefficient and unreliable. This meant that the train operator was struggling to cope with the demands of a growing metropolitan rail network and an increasing passenger load.

ShenTong expects the Nortel Metro Ethernet solution to make all operational and management information -- voice, data and video - to be securely and accurately transmitted and monitored, ensuring seamless communications among train staff and access to the passenger information system at all times. The system will also help ShenTong Metro deliver seamless wireless communications to commuters while traveling the network.

Jackson Wu, president of Nortel China, said that the company's Metro Ethernet solution has helped ShenTong Metro migrate to a cost-effective, reliable transmission system that will help its rail service continue to operate efficiently.
