Sri Lanka Telecom has revealed details of its contract to deploy the next phase of the Lanka Government Network (LGN), designed to connect government buildings across the country.

The government and Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA) last month chose Sri Lanka Telecom as the infrastructure and communications service provider for LGN 2.0.

Speaking to the Colombo Page, Sri Lanka Telecom GCEO Dileepa Wijesundera said the company was selected as the only telecoms license holder in the country with the ability to manage the national backbone network and last mile fiber connections, the report states.

During the first phase of the project, Sri Lanka Telecom deployed an LGN fiber network connecting 315 government facilities. But the network requires a major upgrade to cater for future government initiatives.

The initial work for the project is expected to be completed in a span of three months, according to the report. The ultimate goal is to bring all government agencies together under a single network to improve the efficiency of government processes and improve the lives of the general public.
