Streaming fails to deliver on its promise

Mobile TV take-up has been held back by challenges surrounding streaming complexity including the cost of mobile data, spotty Wi-Fi access or lack of Wi-Fi access, and problems with time consuming downloads.

These are among the findings of Arris’ 2015 Consumer Entertainment Index (CEI) issued at BroadcastAsia in Singapore, which concludes that streaming isn’t delivering on its promise.

The CEI shows that consumers are choosing to get around the issue by downloading at home rather than streaming while on-the-go.

Also, good quality Wi-Fi has become a necessity in consumers’ homes like air, food or water given the additional pressure of numbers of devices and bandwidth required of them.

Expanding on a trend first emerging last year, binge-viewing has gone solo in 2015 and is even more pronounced in Asia Pacific countries.

For the latest CEI, Arris surveyed 19,000 participants — nearly twice the previous year’s pool — in 19 countries around the world.

In Asia Pacific, the report covers six core markets are covered — Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. A thousand respondents represented each country, summing up at a total of 6,000 participants from the region.

Arris also said it has completed its Motorola integration and has reported a 20% year-over-year growth in revenue that registered at $5.2 billion in 2014. For 2015, first-quarter revenue was pencilled in at $1.2 billion.

Recently, Arris and Akamai signed an agreement for ARRIS to support Akamai’s Aura Licensed Content Delivery Network (LCDN) and Aura Object Store products and solutions.

In South Korea, SK Broadband selected the Arris E6000 CER to deliver 1gbps broadband supporting IP-based 4K video services.

In Australia, Arris will build the country’s next-generation hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) broadband network. The project is set to revolutionize Australia's broadband network by providing access to high-speed, reliable broadband services to homes and businesses.
