AFP says that mobile phones are becoming more important than ever to Japanese teenagers. An Education Ministry survey found that :

  • 96% of high-school students carry a mobile phone
  • 25% of middle schoolers use their phones while eating
  • 18% use their mobile in class
  • 7% send more than 100 emails a day.

This extraordinarily wide use of internet-capable mobiles is posing social problems for Japanese children and, since most phones have no internet restrictions, fraudsters and pedophiles can access information from children\'s phones. Of some concern too must be the 10% of teenagers using cellphones in the bath.
