Growing strains on telecom networks case a shadow over the broadband business, China Netcom CEO Zuo Xun Sheng yesterday warned the audience at the BBWF Asia.

He said the popularity of broadband content like video is taking up a lot of bandwidth, placing operators under great pressure to invest in network capacity while strive to retain ROI.

"While our network traffic grew 80% last year, our revenues grew 60%," he said in a keynote address at the Broadband World Forum in Beijing on Wednesday.

Another issue was the lack of a viable business model, due to a lot of unknowns.

Meanwhile, operators also needed to work out effective means of managing and controlling content. They needed to address issues about network security, effectively manage broadband content, and creating a friendly environment for both end-users and stakeholders, Zuo said.
