Google sales chief jumps ship to join Softbank

Longtime Google chief business officer Nikesh Arora has quit the search giant to join SoftBank this October as CEO of its newly formed internet and media operations and vice chairman of the Japanese company.

Omid Kordestani, who has led sales teams at Google for years, has replaced Arora for now, CEO Larry Page said in a blog posted on the Google+ social network.

Arora has been a senior adviser to the office of the CEO and founders, and led Google’s sales teams in the company’s early days in 1999.

He joined Google in 2004, overseeing all revenue and customer operations at Google, as well as marketing and partnerships. He also served in several posts, including development and management of Google’s operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Commenting on the appointment, SoftBank chief executive Masayoshi Son said that Arora “brings a rare set of skills: amazing financial and strategic acumen; a decade of executive experience at one of the fastest growing companies in history; a deep understanding of the telecommunications industry. This makes him uniquely qualified to help guide us through our next stage of growth.”

Son said Arora will work closely with him in defining, implementing and managing the group’s global growth strategy. In addition, as CEO of SIMI, Arora will be directly responsible for overseeing Softbank’s internet, telecommunications, media and global investment activities.

The company plans to nominate Arora to the SoftBank board at the next shareholders meeting, Son added.
