Thai cabinet appointed; oil man takes ICT portfolio

Thailand’s first post-coup cabinet has been appointed under Junta leader General Prayuth Chanocha as prime minister.

Pornchai Rujiprapa takes the helm of the ICT Ministry. Prior to his appointment, Pornchai was a board member of state oil company PTT.

Other past positions include chairman of EGAT, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and former permanent secretary to the Energy Ministry. He graduated with a doctorate in regional economics from the university of Pennsylvania.

Also of interest to the telecoms sector the return of Professor Yongyuth Yuthavong as Deputy Prime Minister.

Yongyuth was Science and Technology Minister under the last military government in 2007 which attempted to order all senior civil servants to cease using foreign based web-mail providers in an attempt to regain data sovereignty.

Twenty of the 32-member cabinet are civilians.
