Thailand's Mae Fah Luang University will deploy the first Cisco-powered Wimax network in Asia Pacific.

The project is handled by local systems integrator TT&T, which previously tested Cisco Mobile Wimax solutions in a school in Bangkok.

Mae Fah Luang, located in Chiang Rai province in north Thailand, obtained license to deploy Wimax license as part of a rural telecenter project geared towards education, in commemoration of the King's 80th birthday.

Based on tests conducted by TT&T, Cisco's Wimax equipment was able to sustain quality data throughput speeds even at a range of five to seven kilometers away in non line-of-sight conditions.

The school plans to run voice, video, data and mobility services over its Wimax network once completed.
