Vietnamobile has teamed up with mobile payments company Fortumo to offer carrier billing for its subscribers on the Google Play app store.

The operator has become the second in Vietnam after Viettel in 2015 to partner with Fortumo for carrier billing for digital content.

Fortumo chief business officer Gerri Kodres said carrier billing is well-suited to markets like Vietnam, where smartphone penetration is at 40% and growing but less than 2% of the population has a credit card.

“Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia and mobile services are a large part of this. Fortumo is proud to be chosen as a partner by Vietnamobile for launching carrier billing on Google Play,” he said.

“Integration with Fortumo’s platform provides Vietnamobile with a robust and scalable solution for connecting them to the world’s largest digital merchants through one integration, along with superior analytics.”

As well as Google Pay, Fortumo's direct carrier billing platform is also used by multiple major digital media providers and gaming companies. Fortumo now has around 350 operator partnerships worldwide.
