Vitesse Semiconductor has announced a new family of Ethernet switches for carrier Ethernet, mobile backhaul, FTTx and PON applications.

The Caracal switch family is part of Vitesse's scalable family of carrier Ethernet ICs. They include network timing and performance monitoring capabilities designed to aid migration of mobile backhaul for packet-based 3G and 4G networks.

As with all of Vitesse's carrier Ethernet switches, the Caracal family includes MEF services-oriented hardware and software architecture.

The switches also implement both synchronous internet and the one- and two-step modes of IEEE 1588v2.
