(Vietnam News Briefs via NewsEdge) The Yahoo! Mobile service will be gauging its popularity and usability among Vietnamese mobile phone subscribers this year, as local mobile operators MobiFone, VinaPhone and Viettel Mobile enter into an agreement with the GAPIT Communication Co. to offer the new service in Vietnam.

Under the deal, GAPIT will provide Yahoo! PC to SMS (PC2SMS) and Yahoo! SMS Messenger to the subscribers of the three service providers.

'Since Yahoo! has become very popular nationwide, we believe the new features will tempt many local Web surfers to test-drive the service,' said Nguyen Duc Thang, general director of GAPIT.

Yahoo Inc. Asia Pacific CEO Reza Behnam added that 'the cooperation between GAPIT and Yahoo Inc. has great potential as it will help Vietnamese mobile communication providers offer more services to their users.'

'New bells and whistles are always effective in attracting more customers, as well as generally raising revenue,' he added

VinaPhone, MobiFone and Viettel Mobile now have a combined subscriber base of more than 12 million, with each having more than four million customers.
