Legendary referee Mills Lane passes away at the age of 85

Mills Lane, a former boxer who became one of the most famous referees of the last half century, died Tuesday morning. He was 85 years old.

Lane suffered a stroke 20 years ago that ended his career.

Mills Lane served many of the biggest fights from the 1970s through the 1990s. He was best known for the 1997 fight between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, where Tyson bit off part of Holyfield's ear.

Lane started boxing in the Marines. He made his professional ring debut in the 1960s. He had 10 wins (six by knockout) and one loss.
