Chicago Tennis Fall: Rybakina grinds out win versus Kudermetova

Elena Rybakina reached the Quarter-Finals in Chicago after pulling off a tough 7-6, 7-5 win against Veronika Kudermetova. It turned out to be a battle of aces with Veronika not allowing Elena to run through her. Elena clasped 9 aces while Kudermetova kept fighting back, notching 10 aces in the game. Elena edged out Veronika in receiving points 40 to 29 whereas she had a slight edge in terms of service points, clinching 49 of them compared to 48 by Kudermetova.

Shelby Rogers also engaged in an intense battle with Mai Hontama, but Hontama finished the business in style. The initial two sets remained tied with Mai taking the first one 6-4 and Rogers pulling in a 7-6 second set performance. However, Hontama dominated the deciding set 6-1 to pull ahead of Shelby and advance to the best of eight.

In other games, Jabeur beat Pegula 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. Mertens overcame Collins 6-2, 6-4 while Teichmann lost to Marketa 6-4, 6-3. Svitolina triumphed over Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-3. Bencic beat Martincova 6-2, 7-5 and Garbine Muguruza got a walkover win versus Victoria Azarenka.
