Joan Laporta, the president of La Liga club Barcelona, has expressed doubts about the potential transfer of winger Nico Williams from and the Spain national team, who recently became a champion at Euro 2024.
According to Cadena SER columnist Santi Ovalle, the 22-year-old midfielder has hurt Laporta's pride with this decision to turn down a move to Barcelona in the summer of 2024. It is also believed that signing the younger Williams brother could create an overly friendly atmosphere in the locker room.
On June 13, Sport.es reported that officials from the Catalan club met with Williams' agents despite Laporta's statements. It was noted that the priority option for Barcelona is Luis Diaz, a winger from Liverpool and the Colombia national team.
Williams currently has a contract with the Basques that runs until the end of June 2027. According to Transfermarkt, his market value is estimated at 70 million euros. In the 2024/2025 season, the Athletic winger has played 29 La Liga matches, scoring five goals and providing as many assists, and he has also appeared in 13 UEFA Europa League matches (5 goals, 3 assists).
On June 14, it was announced that Barcelona do not intend to continue with four first-team players: goalkeeper Iñaki Peña, midfielder Pablo Torre, and forwards Pau Victor and Ansu Fati.
