Former head of the Football Association of Uzbekistan, Alisher Nikimbaev, commented on the appointment of former Italy national team player Fabio Cannavaro as head coach of Uzbekistan’s national team.
Alisher Nikimbaev
Calling Cannavaro as the Uzbekistan coach is a risky move. The football federation has found a foreign coach like they wanted. What worries me is that the coach has no prior experience working with a national team. All hope rests on Cannavaro’s understanding of football. He can handle this job because he knows the sport from the inside. The entire hope is on his intuition. But it concerns me that Cannavaro has never really coached a national team. One thing is to train a team daily. Another is to meet them only during training camps.
On October 6, Uzbekistan’s national team press service officially announced Cannavaro’s appointment. The 52-year-old coach will lead the team at the 2026 World Cup.
Cannavaro has previously coached China’s national team, Udinese, Dinamo Zagreb, Benevento, Al Nassr, Guangzhou Evergrande, and Tianjin Quanjian.
