Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, the former president of the Portuguese Primeira Liga football club FC Porto, has passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by the official website of the team. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
An eternal inspiration. An immortal legacy. Farewell, President of Presidents.
On February 16, all teams of the club, including the first team that will face Farense away in the 22nd round of the championship, will honor da Costa's memory with a moment of silence.
Da Costa served as president of FC Porto from 1984 to 2024. During his tenure, the "dragões" won the national championship 23 times (most recently in the 2021/2022 season) and claimed the UEFA Champions League title twice (1986/1987, 2003/2004). Additionally, he was involved in the Portuguese football corruption scandal known as the Apito Dourado in 2008-2009, from which he was ultimately acquitted.
As of the 2024/2025 Primeira Liga season, and after 21 matches played, FC Porto have earned 43 points. The club had dismissed head coach Vítor Bruno in January 2025 and hired Martín Anselmi in his place, currently sitting in third position in the league standings.
