Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has announced his intention to reduce the number of players in his squad before the new season begins.
He expressed satisfaction with the current team and player behavior but believes it is inappropriate to have six or seven substitutes on the bench who aren't getting playing time.
Pep Guardiola quoted by ESPN
The problem is they will be unhappy during the season, they will be sad, they will be disappointed. I don’t want that. We have - right now - a long squad, too many players, so we cannot go with 26, 27 players this season.
He had previously mentioned that he would not remain at City if forced to work with an excessively big squad.
In the last Premier League season, the Citizens finished third in the standings, earning 71 points. In the Champions League, the team was eliminated in the knockout stage by Real Madrid (2-3, 1-3 on aggregate).
The Club World Cup is currently underway. You can find the tournament's overview here.
