Poland's head coach Michal Probierz explained why he decided to strip striker Robert Lewandowski of the captain's armband.
Michal Probierz quoted by Sportskeeda
After the match against Moldova, I decided there would be a change of captain for the national team. The time and place were difficult, and besides, he was an exceptional player. However, I decided it was a good time to hand over the armband to someone else. Robert said he wanted the change of captain to be announced publicly. I didn’t agree, because it was simply my decision. Then I learned from the media that he was resigning from the national team. I believe this is the best decision for the team at this time.
Recently it became known that Robert Lewandowski refused to play for the Polish national team because of loss of trust in Michal Probierz.
The 36-year-old forward has been playing for the Polish national team since 2008. The best achievement of Robert Lewandowski with the national team is advancing to the quarter finals of the European Championship in 2016.
It should be noted that Michal Probierz led the Polish national team in 2023. Under his leadership, the national team crashed out at the group stage of Euro 2024.
