Newly-crowned European champions, PSG, kick off their FIFA Club World Cup with a clash against Atletico Madrid in California. The two European sides are favorites to qualify from Group B, which also includes Brazil's Botafogo and the USA's Seattle Sounders. PSG, who won their first Champions League trophy a few weeks ago to conclude a record-setting treble-winning season in French football, are one of the favorites to win the maiden FIFA Club World Cup, designed to model the World Cup. Atletico Madrid beat PSG last year in the group phase of the Champions League, but they are huge underdogs here, with PSG expected to brush them aside.

PSG

Luis Enrique's PSG has been in imperious form of late. Aside from the little matter of obliterating the Nerazzurri in the Champions League final, PSG has only lost twice in their last 10 matches, in meaningless games against Strasbourg and Nice, and have scored 23 times in the period. They won the Ligue 1 by a canter, claimed the Coupe de France, and finished the season with 152 goals. The goals have come from everywhere, including marauding full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes, who are arguably the best right and left back in the world at the moment. Talisman Ousmane Dembele is likely to miss the opener after leaving the France squad at the Nations League following an injury. But forwards Desire Doue, who made three three-goal contributions in the Champions League final, Bradley Barcola and Goncalo Ramos are ready to step in and play. PSG dominated Atletico Madrid in their Champions League tie last year, but the Spaniards defended deep and grabbed a 93rd-minute winner. PSG would be wary of such a tactic again.

PSG possible starting lineup:

Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Vitinha, Fabian Ruiz, Doué, Ramos, Kvaratskhelia

Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid have another chance to win silverware this year after failing to mount a challenge in La Liga and exiting the Copa del Rey at the last four in April. With the pressure seemingly off in the final games of the season with nothing to play for, Madrid clicked and engineered an impressive six wins from ten games, scoring nearly twenty goals in their last five matches. Atletico's international cast all came back unscathed from their international exertions, with Jan Oblak, who missed the last game of the season, featuring for Slovenia. Diego Simeone will hope his lads can execute their classic smash-and-grab again after Ángel Correa's added-time goal in Paris last year, earning them a 1-0 win despite only having 30% of the possession. Atletico will be counting on the fact that despite PSG's dominance and goal-scoring exploits recently, they have conceded eight goals in their last ten matches.

Atletico Madrid possible starting lineup:

Oblak; Molina, Le Normand, Gimenez, Javi Galan, Simeone, De Paul, Koke, Gallagher, Griezmann, Alvarez
