Referee Should Have Cancelled Alvarez’s Free Kick Goal Against Real Madrid

During a review of the goal scored by Julian Alvarez, Atletico Madrid’s forward, against Real Madrid in the 64th minute of the seventh round of the Spanish league (match ended 5-2), the VAR team made an error.

According to Archivo VAR, which specializes in referee decisions, before the Argentine striker took the free kick, Atletico defender Robin Le Normand committed a foul. He was less than one meter away from the defensive wall, violating the rules that require a minimum distance of one meter between the attacking player and the wall before the ball is in play.

The VAR team should have alerted the main referee, Javier Alberola Rojas, to this infringement. It is noted that the goal scored against Real Madrid was scored in violation of the rules.
