Napoli and Belgium national team footballer Romelu Lukaku revealed he faced pressure and attempts of extortion from relatives regarding his father’s funeral.
On September 28, Roger Lukaku, Romelu’s father, died at the age of 58 in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His sons and other relatives wanted to hold the funeral in Belgium, but disagreements arose within the family.
Romelu said that he and his brother had planned the funeral for Friday, but due to decisions made in Kinshasa, the ceremony will take place there.
Our dad passed away on the 28 of September and we as Brothers tried everything to bring his corpse back to Europe but we felt that we were being extorted by some people… If our father was here today he wouldn’t accept it. It breaks our soul for us to not put our father to rest.
Roger Lukaku was a former football player who spent most of his career in Belgium and played five matches for the Zaire national team (now the DR Congo). His second son, Jordan Lukaku, is a Belgian citizen and has played since 2023 for the Turkish club Adanaspor.
