UEFA Considers Eliminating Minimal Offsides

Giorgio Marchetti, the Secretary General of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), expressed his belief that football should eliminate minimal offsides.

In his opinion for La Gazzetta dello Sport, an offside by just a few millimeters creates discomfort. Therefore, changes are being considered to only take into account significant parts of the body when determining offside position.

A similar view was previously expressed by former Arsenal head coach and FIFA's Director of Global Football Development, Arsène Wenger. Last year, it was reported that the International Football Association Board (IFAB) intended to consider Wenger's proposals for changing the offside rule.

Wenger had also previously questioned the practicality of automatically granting the UEFA Europa League winner a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
