UEFA has released a statement regarding the disallowed penalty awarded to Julian Alvarez of Atletico Madrid during the Champions League match against Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid approached UEFA seeking clarification on the situation that led to the annulment of the goal.
In the statement, UEFA explains that despite minimal contact, the player touched the ball with his standing foot before the shot, as confirmed by video footage.
According to Rule 14.1, the VAR system had to call the referee about the annulment of the goal.
UEFA has announced the initiation of discussions with FIFA and IFAB to reconsider the rule regarding double contact with the ball in cases where it is clearly unintentional.
Alvarez has been with Atletico Madrid since August 2024. He has played 43 matches for the club, scoring 22 goals and providing five assists.
Earlier, Daily Mail reported that Real Madrid's striker Kylian Mbappe was the first to approach the referee following Alvarez's penalty. Additionally, Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois shared his thoughts on the match against Atletico.
