Eight United Nations (UN) experts have sent an official appeal to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), calling on them to suspend Israeli clubs and national teams from participation in international competitions. This was reported by journalist Jose Luis Morales.
According to Morales, the UN representatives demand exclusion of Israeli teams in response to the ongoing conflict in Palestine.
On September 21, Israel Hayom media outlet reported UEFA might consider banning Israel at an upcoming meeting. Sources say most of the 20 member countries with voting rights support this move, while only two or three oppose it.
The Israel Football Association (IFA) is reportedly trying to prevent the issue from being added to the official agenda.
Earlier, former Manchester United and France player Eric Cantona called on FIFA and UEFA to exclude Israeli teams, citing the precedent of Russia’s suspension from international football.
