Venezuelan National Coach Fired After World Cup Qualifying Failure

The press service of the Venezuelan Football Federation (FVF) has officially announced the dismissal of Argentina’s Fernando Batista from his role as head coach of the national team.

The 55‑year‑old Batista, who had been in charge since March 2023, was relieved of his duties for failing to meet the objectives set for the team in CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

On September 9 in Maturín, Venezuela lost 3-6 to Colombia. The team ended up eighth with 18 points after 18 matches, losing the intercontinental playoff spot to Bolivia.

Notably, Venezuela is the only one of CONMEBOL’s ten member nations that has never taken part in a World Cup final tournament.
