Former NBA Dunk Contest winner Gerald Green retires

Known for his high-flying slam dunks, guard Gerald Green has called time on his NBA playing career. The guard played from 2005-2019 in the NBA across 13 seasons and represented 8 different NBA teams. He jumped to popularity during his 2007 NBA Dunk Contest trophy-winning performance. However, his most memorable performance came in the 2008 contest, where he literally blew off a candle kept on a birthday cake above the rim.

Gerald’s best season came with Phoenix Suns during 2013-14 when he averaged a career-best 15.8 PPG and shot 40% from the three-point line, also his career-high. At the tail end of his career, the guard predominantly became a three-point shooter like most veterans. He averaged 9.2 PPG in his last season in the league, playing for Houston Rockets. He has now joined the coaching staff of the Houston Rockets.
