BJJ Champion Marcelo Garcia Shares His Fight with Cancer

Five-time world champion in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Marcelo Garcia is set to compete in a grappling match against Japanese fighter Masakazu Imanari at ONE 170. He shares his experience of battling stomach cancer.

ONE press service quotes Garcia as saying:

Marcelo Garcia
It was not fun at all to go through the treatment. I ended up doing eight sessions of chemotherapy. The first four were really rough. The last four, not terrible. And in between those eight chemotherapy sessions, I ended up having a big surgery. That changed a lot of the dynamics inside my body, my stomach, my esophagus. And the crazy thing is how it’s just a year ago that I finished my treatment, but it feels like it’s been so long. I’m not gonna lie, I almost forgot everything.

The 43-year-old Garcia has also won the ADCC title four times, which is regarded as the most prestigious grappling tournament. In 2011, he retired from competing to focus on his academy in New York and raising his two children.
