In an exclusive interview with Telecomasia.net, Russian UFC fighter Irina Alekseeva commented on Islam Makhachev's move up to the welterweight division and his decision to relinquish the lightweight championship title.
"Islam likely relinquished the championship belt because the UFC wanted him to vacate the title after the division change. There was a similar discussion when Topuria was moving up to lightweight," Alekseeva stated.

Makhachev and his team are confident that he can also get the welterweight title. The idea that Islam is running away from Topuria is total nonsense, as Makhachev is not at a level where he needs to avoid anyone or be afraid. He has long proven himself to everyone. However, all these discussions from couch experts will continue until Islam faces Ilia in the octagon.
On May 14, it was announced that Islam Makhachev would vacate his lightweight championship title to move up to the welterweight division. On June 29, Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira will compete for the vacant title at UFC 317.
