In an exclusive interview with Telecomasia.net, Russian UFC fighter Irina Alekseeva shared her thoughts on the upcoming bout between Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena, giving her perspective on Makhachev’s chances of winning the welterweight championship.
Makhachev has a significant physical advantage in the lightweight division. He’s quite tall and has long limbs, so I doubt he will appear much smaller in the welterweight category. Besides, he will weigh more. Yes, Della Maddalena is an unpredictable, tough opponent, but I’m sure Makhachev will secure the title even at welterweight. It’s generally challenging for anyone to fight Makhachev because he is well-rounded.
“I can’t see a scenario where Islam loses unless a phenomenal new fighter emerges, or something goes wrong during training, like an injury. It’s hard to believe that would happen. However, younger opponents can indeed be fiercer. But I think Islam understands that too. Also, many fighters relax after making a lot of money, but that’s not the case with Islam, I respect that. He fights as if it's his debut every time," said Alekseeva.
On May 14, it was reported that Islam Makhachev vacated his lightweight championship title to move up to the welterweight class to face the current champion, Jack Della Maddalena.
Currently, 33-year-old Makhachev boasts 27 wins and one loss, while 28-year-old Della Maddalena holds 18 wins and two losses.
