John Martin, the new head of the PFL league, released a statement explaining the championship system that the organization will use moving forward. After the PFL and Bellator merger, confusion arose in the MMA community regarding who holds the true title in each weight division.
Going forward, each division will have one PFL World Champion, the single, undisputed titleholder in that weight class. My goal is clear: one champion, one division, one world title, a system that is simple for athletes to chase and for PFL fans to follow. I also know there has been confusion around unique distinctions in the past, like the ‘Super Fight’ title won by Francis Ngannou. That was a special, one-time designation. Going forward, those belts may be used only for occasional special events.
Notably, the lightweight title rematch between Usman Nurmagomedov and Paul Hughes will headline the PFL Champions Series 3 tournament on October 3 in Dubai. The same event will feature the light heavyweight title fight between Corey Anderson and Dovletdzhan Yagshimuradov.
On December 13 in Lyon, France, a PFL event will feature two title fights. The main event will be the heavyweight championship bout between Vadim Nemkov and Renan Ferreira. The co-main event will see Cris Cyborg and Sara Collins fight for the women’s featherweight title.
