Taliban bans women from playing sports

After taking over Afghanistan, the Taliban has announced that they will not allow women to take part in sporting activities. Ahmadullah Wasiq who is the Taliban “cultural commission” deputy head said in an interview that women are barred from all sports and can’t play cricket as it is “not necessary” for them.

Last month, Khalida Popal, an ex-Afghanistan football player urged Afghani athletes to erase their social media accounts and dispose of their kits. She also helped in the evacuation of many of Afghanistan’s women football players to avoid being hunted down by a surging Taliban regime. Earlier Afghanistan women’s crickets accused International Cricket Council(ICC) of ignoring their plea for help.
