Estonian Kaia Kanepi defeated Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the Australian Open. Veteran Kanepi is ranked 115 right now(Having reached a career-best ranking of 15 earlier) while Kerber entered the tournament as the 16th seed. Kanepi outhustled Kerber in terms of service points, winning 43 of them compared to Angelique’s 31. Kerber fought harder on the receiving points, coming just two short of Kanepi’s 30. In other games, Canadian sensation and US Open Finalist Leylah Fernandez got beaten by Madison Inglis in the first round 4-6, 2-6. Meanwhile, US Open Winner Emma Raducanu will face Sloane Stephens today.
