WBBL: Sydney wins 2021 season opener against Melbourne

Sydney Sixers won a rain-affected match by six wickets and four balls to spare. Melbourne set a target of 100 runs in the reduced 11 overs and the Sixers gunned it down in 10.2 Overs. Batting first, the Melbourne team experimented with Annabel Sutherland at the top and just lost her wicket during all of the innings.

Annabel and Elyse Villani put up 49 runs for the first wicket before Sutherland got run out via a superb direct hit by Shefali Verma. Then captain Meg Lanning and Elyse put up a partnership of 50 runs to post 99 in 11 overs. Elyse bagged 54 runs off just 31 balls while Meg made 23 runs off 17 balls. Sutherland could only muster up 14 runs and took 19 balls for it.

Alyssa Healy gave the Sixers a fast-paced start and when the first wicket fell at 40 runs, Shefali only made 8 runs in the partnership before getting clean bowled by Annabel. Ashleigh Gardner and Alyssa put on 43 runs, but again Gardner only contributed 7 runs in the partnership and fell to Kim Garth.

Healy and Perry fell soon too and the Sixers lost three wickets in a space of 12 runs. However, the equation looked simple by then, and Nicole Bolton easily finished the chase along with Angela Reakes. Alyssa made 57 runs off just 27 balls and the second-highest runs came via 11 extras, including 7 wides that hurt the Stars in the end.
