On paper, Germany appears to be the biggest underdog of the last eight Davis Cup Finals nations, but in Tim Puets and Kevin Krawietz, they have two unbeaten doubles players in this tournament, either as a pair or with other partners. Getting Germany to a doubles decider will be critical if they are to have a chance of beating a full-strength Canada team. With world number 65 Oscar Otte filling in for Alexander Zverev as the first option, much of this tie hinges on world number 152 Jen-Lennard Struff continuing his odd rivalry with Denis Shapovalov.

Struff leads Shapovalov 5-3 in their head-to-head record, and he has won at least one set in each of their eight tour meetings, including a loss to the Canadian at the ATP Cup this January.

Canada has the highest-ranked player in the draw in 22-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime, who enters the tournament at a career-high world number six after winning three titles in three weeks. On his path to his third of three victories, the kid defeated newly crowned world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the Davis Cup group stages directly following the US Open, and then again in the Swiss Indoors. Denis Shapovalov, world number 18, found some decent form late in the season, but a loss to Yoshihito Nishioka in the final of the Korea Open was another frustrating result given his high ceiling.

Vasek Pospisil won a Challenger event last weekend, signaling a solid return to form ahead of the Davis Cup Finals, a tournament in which he has consistently exceeded expectations, and it would not be surprising to see him called upon as an experienced voice alongside one of the two youngsters in a doubles decider.

Canada is the overwhelming favorite, but Germany has the superior doubles option. If Canada wins the first match, they should win 2-0, but Germany should win 2-1 if Jan-Lennard Struff defeats Denis Shapovalov for the ninth time. Without in-play, the most logical bet is on Canada to win outright.
