Simona Halep comes into the tournament after winning against Anastasia Potapova but then conceding a walkover against Veronica Kudermetova in the Round of 32. Before that, she had won the Canadian Open, defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia in the Final in a run where she defeated heavyweights Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Jil Teichmann. In her last Grand Slam, Wimbledon, she reached the Semis only to lose to Elena Rybakina in a run where she had beaten Paula Badosa earlier.

Two-time Grand Slam winner Halep has been still posing significant threats and has forged her way yet again in the top-ten rankings. The Romanian receiving game still remains impressive and when she gets her serve game going, the opponents are rattled in more ways than one can count. Simona has had a terrific year but she will like to wrap it up with a Grand Slam title.

Daria Snigur

Ukrainian Daria is just 20 years old and had to work her way through the Qualifiers to make it this far. She is ranked below 100 and usually, in majors, she is entering as a Qualifier. She plays more in the ITF circuit as her experience in WTA is still fresh. During Wimbledon, she was unable to make it past the Qualifiers thus getting into the main rounds is a challenge in a big way. During French Open too, her campaign was thwarted in the Qualifiers itself. Basically, Singur has a lot of lifting to do before being considered a WTA regular in main rounds.

Simona will enter the US Open as one of the contenders and she has proven her mettle repeatedly this year. On the other hand, Daria is not expected to make it past Halep and that is the least surprising thing considering her inexperience and inability to win against top players. Thus, I’d back Halep to nab an easy two-set win here.
