Slovakian former world number 43, Viktoria Kuzmova meets 31st seed Rogers Shelby in the second round of the US Open. In their last meeting at the Billie Jean King cup last November, Kuzmova defeated Rogers in straight sets. Rogers though has had a better 2022. She ended up reaching the third final and first at a WTA 500 event in her career after defeating Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets at the Silicon Valley Classic.

Viktoria Kuzmova

Kuzmova upset Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets: 6-3, 6-4 to make it into the second round of the US Open. She won 71% of points on her first serve and 5/12 break points, The qualifier steamrolled into the main draw without dropping a set in three matches. Kuzmova played in the qualifiers because the former world number 43 saw her rankings plummet to outside the top 100. Though she grew up on clay, her best surface is the hard court and this came into play in her first round match.

31st seed Shelby Rogers clocked 73% on her first serve to negotiate a two sets to one win over Arantxa Rus in the first round of the US Open. Rogers lost the first set but rallied to win the next two and book her process into the second round. The American’s preparation for the US Open went smoothly as she got to the final of the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose where she lost to Daria Kasatkina.
