Two-time runners-up Malaysia sent shockwaves through the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup on Saturday, toppling defending champions South Korea 4–1 in Ragjir, Bihar. It was the most emphatic result of the tournament so far, turning Pool B on its head and thrusting Malaysia into pole position for a place in the Super 4s.

Korea, the most successful team in the 43-year history of the competition, looked in control when Geonhyo Jin struck within two minutes of the opening whistle. But Malaysia’s spirited response set the tone for a remarkable turnaround that could define their campaign.

Anuar’s Hat-trick Seals Famous Win

Malaysia grew in confidence as the match progressed, stringing together clever passes and pushing the Korean defence deep inside their own circle. The breakthrough came in the second quarter when Akhimullah Anuar equalised with neat footwork and composure in front of goal.
The third quarter proved decisive. Ashran Hamsani pounced on a turnover to fire Malaysia ahead in the 33rd minute, before Anuar doubled his tally from a penalty corner soon after. Despite Korea’s attempts to rally, Malaysia’s backline stood firm, denying their rivals clear chances.
In the closing stages, Anuar capped off a memorable evening with his third goal — a superbly taken strike that sealed the upset and earned him man-of-the-match honours.
With two wins in two matches, Malaysia now top Pool B and are well-placed for a Super 4 berth. For Korea, however, the pressure is mounting, as they can ill afford another slip-up in what has suddenly become a wide-open group.

Bangladesh Bounce Back in Style
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh reignited their campaign with a resounding 8–3 victory over Chinese Taipei. The win not only gave them valuable points but also showcased their attacking prowess after a stuttering start to the tournament. Bangladesh, beaten 1–4 by Malaysia in their opener, looked determined to make amends. Goals came early, but spirited counterattacks from Chinese Taipei ensured the first half ended evenly at 2–2.

The complexion of the match changed after the break. Rakibul Hasan struck twice in quick succession to give Bangladesh breathing space. Ashraful Islam, their trusted drag-flicker, extended the lead with clinical precision, while Rezaul Babu celebrated his first international goal with a neat deflection. By the time Chinese Taipei pulled one back through Shih Tsung-Jen, the contest had long slipped away.
The final whistle confirmed an 8–3 triumph that lifted Bangladesh to the top half of the standings alongside Malaysia, keeping their hopes of a Super 4 berth alive. For Chinese Taipei, with two heavy defeats, progression is now all but impossible.

What Lies Ahead
Sunday promises more drama as two-time bronze medallists China face Kazakhstan, while hosts India lock horns with Japan in a clash that could all but decide the group leader in Pool A.
