Cheteshwar Pujara’s decision to retire from all forms of cricket was not part of his immediate plans. But after being categorically told by the national selectors that there was no way back into the Test team, the Saurashtra stalwart decided to call it a day. In a move that underlined his selflessness, Pujara also stepped away from domestic cricket, creating space for the next generation to pursue their dream of wearing the India cap.

From Assurance to Abrupt Farewell
Sources close to Pujara told Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net) that retirement wasn’t on his radar.
After playing the last match of the season, he had made it clear he would return next year.
His home team, Saurashtra, had also been hopeful of seeing him in action again after his verbal commitment. But the consistent rejection over the last two years made it increasingly difficult for him to continue, even at the domestic level.
First Signs of an End
The first major indication came when West Zone selectors invited Pujara to play in the Duleep Trophy during India’s recent tour of England. His refusal to participate was read by many as a signal that his career at the top level was drawing to a close.
“Deserved a farewell” – Ghavri
Former India cricketer and Saurashtra coach Karsan Ghavri expressed disappointment at how things unfolded. “It was very difficult for him to take this decision. A comeback was always going to be tough, but he certainly deserved a farewell. Anybody who plays over 100 Tests should be given a farewell match,” said Ghavri, who guided Saurashtra to their maiden Ranji Trophy title in 2019.
Rahane also out of plans
Pujara isn’t the only senior pushed out of the Test picture. Sources confirmed that Ajinkya Rahane has also been quietly informed he no longer features in India’s long-term plans. Whether he opts for another domestic season remains to be seen, but the writing is clear: both Pujara and Rahane, two pillars of Indian Test cricket in the last decade, will not wear the India whites again.
Age factor cited in selection meetings
Insiders revealed that the selectors have maintained a consistent stance on the duo. During one squad meeting for the Champions Trophy, when Karun Nair’s name was discussed, the names of Pujara and Rahane came up only as examples of players who would not be considered again because of age.
