As a professional golfer, Joshua Seale is chasing two parallel dreams. One is deeply personal — qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The other is larger than himself — building a stronger future for golf in Uganda, the country he now proudly represents.

Born in South Africa and residing in the United States, Seale competes globally across the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), PGA Tour China Series, and the Gira Profesional Mexicana, gathering valuable Official World Golf Ranking points. Each tournament moves him closer to the Olympic cut.

But it’s his second mission that defines his heart. It began with a breakthrough victory at the Uganda Open in 2016, a moment that sparked national interest and put Seale in touch with key figures in the Ugandan government. The East African country, long starved of international golfing success, saw potential in Seale — and offered him citizenship through naturalisation.

Seale embraced the opportunity. Between 2017 and 2022, while jetting across the world for tournaments, he made annual pilgrimages to Uganda, building both roots and relationships.

The move was mutually beneficial: Seale became Uganda’s top-ranked golfer, boosting his Olympic prospects, while the Ugandan Golf Federation gained a globally experienced player to champion the sport domestically.

Seale admitted in an interview with Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net)
But growing the game has proven more difficult than Seale anticipated. Red tape and outdated perceptions about golf are major hurdles.

Still, Seale remains optimistic. One of the key goals is to bring the Uganda Open onto the DP World Tour calendar, which would dramatically elevate its visibility.

Seale said
Uganda hasn’t tapped into tournaments as a growth driver. Getting a global tour involved will be a catalyst — it’ll attract sponsors, media and young talent.

The current numbers underscore the need for change. Uganda has just 40–50 professionals, and fewer than 10 can compete internationally at a high level. Infrastructure is limited, and the domestic circuit — known as the Pearl of Africa Golf Series — struggles with funding.

Seale is working hard to change that. He’s in active talks with potential sponsors to bring more events to Uganda’s local tour. “If I can get sponsors on board, prize money will follow. That will transform the domestic scene,” he said.

But Seale’s efforts don’t stop at infrastructure. He’s also investing in the next generation. Two of Uganda’s promising young golfers, Colline Ajidra and Michael Alunga, are currently part of the golf programme at Livingstone College in North Carolina — with Seale providing both financial backing and mentorship.

The results are beginning to show. Alunga’s recent win at the Kenya Amateur Open has strengthened his case to turn professional. As they prepare to make that leap, Seale is encouraging them to compete in India.

Seale said
The PGTI is an ideal testing ground. It offers world ranking points, decent prize money and tough fields. These boys can benefit from my experience in India.

Joshua Seale is a rare athlete — one who understands that legacy isn’t just medals or milestones. It’s the seeds you plant for others.

Whether on the fairways of India or mentoring future pros from Uganda, Seale is swinging for something greater than himself — and that may just be his finest stroke yet.
