Aaron Rai captured his second Rolex Series crown and third DP World Tour title after defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off at the 2025 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday.

The Englishman began the final day with a one-shot advantage, but Fleetwood’s fast start saw Rai trailing by two early in the round. Rai quickly responded, however, producing four consecutive birdies on the front nine to reclaim momentum on what proved to be a roller-coaster Sunday.
Momentum Swings as Rivalry Intensifies
Fleetwood, calm and composed, continued to apply pressure with a bogey-free 66 featuring four birdies and a stunning eagle. But Rai was not done. A brilliant late charge saw him birdie the 16th and 17th, drawing level with Fleetwood at the top heading up the final hole.
Rai had a chance to seal victory in regulation, but his birdie attempt on the 18th slipped just wide, sending the contest to extra holes.
Decisive Moment on the First Extra Hole
Under the spotlight of the playoff, Rai made no mistake—rolling in his birdie putt at the first extra hole to secure the championship and lift the trophy in Abu Dhabi. Rai, who closed with a round of 67 featuring seven birdies and two bogeys, finished the week at 25-under-par.
It’s hard to sum up. You’re so focused on staying in your zone and playing each shot. I’m just amazed to be standing here. Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person — that says everything. Playing with him the last two days was really special.
Staying Present After Setback
Rai also acknowledged the crucial support from his caddie, Jason Timmis, particularly after a missed short putt at the 14th: “It was a bit of a shock to the system. Jason was great — just reminding me to stay present. The up-and-down on the 15th helped a lot and gave me confidence to finish strong. I’m really glad I could close it out.”
McIlroy Surges, Højgaard in the Mix
Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy fired an astonishing 10-under 62, finishing just one shot short of the playoff alongside Nicolai Højgaard, tied for third. Daniel Hillier and Richard Mansell finished two strokes further back at 22-under.
Rai entered the week 55th in the season-long rankings, needing a standout performance to qualify for next week’s DP World Tour Championship. He now heads to the finale as the Tour’s newest champion.
