Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis stunned fans by announcing he will skip the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) instead, a move quickly labelled “big news” by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

At 41, du Plessis remains a global T20 draw, but the IPL’s increasingly fierce competition, coupled with his modest returns in recent editions, made his future in the league uncertain. Deep down, he would have sensed that securing a place in the high-intensity IPL ecosystem was becoming harder with age.
This year, I have decided to take a new challenge and will play in the Pakistan Super League 2026.
Not a Goodbye to IPL, Says Faf
This league has been a massive part of my journey. I’ve been lucky to play with world-class teammates, for amazing franchises, and in front of fans whose passion is like nothing else. India has given me friendships, lessons, and memories that shaped me as a cricketer and a person.
His announcement was quickly reposted across PCB platforms, amplifying the enthusiasm surrounding the signing.
PSL Expansion Makes Star Power Essential
The PSL will expand to eight teams in 2026, with two new franchises joining in January. With more squads to fill, league officials expect fierce competition for marquee overseas players, and du Plessis instantly becomes one of the most sought-after names.
It is great news for PSL. There will be a beeline for Du Plessis—he is a quality player and will add to the attraction and status of the league.
A Veteran With Massive Franchise Experience
Du Plessis brings heavyweight credentials. He has played 154 IPL matches, representing Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, Pune Supergiants, and Delhi Capitals. He was signed for US$240,000 by Delhi for the 2025 season but was released after his forgettable campaign for the franchise, struggling with injury.
Having said that, with his experience and global fanbase, his arrival is expected to heighten PSL’s international profile.
