Pakistan Shaheens’ unbeaten run to the Emerging Asia Cup title in Doha has prompted legendary pacer Wasim Akram to revise his long-held opinion that Pakistan was facing a talent drought.

Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport (www.telecomasia.net), the iconic left-arm fast bowler said he was “amazed” by the young side’s performance, acknowledging that their displays forced him to reconsider his earlier stance.
A lot of people had this opinion, even I used to say this, that there is a lack of talent in Pakistan. But Shaheen’s superb show has proved that there is talent in the country and all we need is to groom that talent for the future.
Unbeaten Campaign Under Irfan Khan and Ijaz Ahmed Junior
Led by captain Irfan Khan and guided by coach Ijaz Ahmed Junior, the Shaheens did not lose a single match in the tournament. Their statement win came against a strong Indian side, whom they defeated by eight wickets.
Pakistan–India is always the match of any event, so when the Shaheens won against India, they proved they were a title-seeking team. The body language of the players was also very impressive.
The Shaheens went on to beat a spirited Bangladesh in a dramatic Super Over finish in Sunday’s final, sealing their third Emerging Asia Cup crown, the most by any team in the seven editions of the tournament.
Young Players Catch Wasim’s Eye
Wasim highlighted several emerging players who impressed him throughout the competition.
Some of the players like Maaz Sadaqat, Saad Masood and Ahmed Danyal are very impressive,” he said. “Danyal bowled at good pace and with impressive line and length. I think he is one for the future.
Danyal, who has featured in two T20Is for Pakistan, defended seven runs in the final over to tie the match before taking two wickets for just six in the Super Over, a defining performance in the title win.
Signs of Progress Ahead of T20 World Cup
Wasim believes the national team is also shaping up well for the Twenty20 World Cup.
I am sure they will select the best squad of 15 players with the World Cup just two months away and schedule announced.
The former captain also expressed confidence in Shaheen Shah Afridi’s development as leader.
“Shaheen is leading the ODI side and has shown good fight in bowling and in leading the side. I am sure he will improve with time because he is very hard-working.”
