The United Arab Emirates face a stern test when they take on Morocco in the first semi-final of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar on Monday, with both nations chasing a maiden appearance in the final of the competition.

With defending champions Algeria eliminated in the quarter-finals, the tournament is guaranteed to crown a new winner later this week.

High Stakes at Al Bayt Stadium

The UAE–Morocco encounter will be followed by an all-Asian semi-final between Saudi Arabia and Jordan at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. Jordan secured their place in the last four with a narrow 1–0 win over Iraq, while Saudi Arabia edged past Palestine 2-1 after extra time. The winners of Monday’s clash in Al Rayyan will meet either Saudi Arabia or Jordan in the final.

UAE’s Road: Resilience and Redemption

The UAE’s journey to the semi-finals has been one of steady growth. After suffering an opening group-stage defeat to Jordan, Cosmin Olaroiu’s side regrouped, improved with each outing, and produced a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals.

Four years ago, the UAE exited at the same stage. This time, the Khalifa International Stadium showdown represents a significant step closer to silverware.

Olaroiu Confident Despite Injury Concerns

UAE head coach Cosmin Olaroiu acknowledged the scale of the challenge but remained confident in his team’s mindset.

Olaroiu at the pre-match press conference
An important match awaits us against Morocco. Reaching the semi-final stage of such a major tournament is a significant achievement.

“Playing a team as big as Morocco is already difficult, and at this stage, mental preparation becomes crucial. I am confident the players will give their all to achieve victory.”

The UAE are managing injuries to key figures Fabio Lima and Khalid Eisa, but will draw confidence from young goalkeeper Hamad Al Meqbaali, the hero of the penalty shoot-out against Algeria, as well as attacking threats Caio Lucas and Bruno.

Morocco Unbeaten but Not Unscathed

Morocco arrive as one of only two unbeaten teams left in the competition after defeating Syria in the quarter-finals. However, they will be without suspended defender Mohamed Moufid and have fitness concerns over influential forward Tarik Tissoudali. Forward Walid Azaro stressed the squad’s adaptability in the face of adversity.

Azaro
We have some players missing, but we will overcome these obstacles and be ready. What’s important is that we find solutions.

Final Within Reach for Both Sides

UAE goalkeeper Adel Al Hosani, speaking alongside Olaroiu, underlined the team’s determination and reliance on fan support.

Al Hosani
The team will give its best in such a difficult match.

With a new champion guaranteed and both teams seeking a historic breakthrough, Monday’s semi-final promises a compelling contest, one defined by resilience, belief, and the lure of a first-ever Arab Cup final.
